Marketing and the Creative Industry

Marketing and the Creative Industry

1)   Do a case study on the marketing of life on mars.
There is a lot of marketing for Life on Mars ranging from posters to spin off books and websites. They have posters that follow a colour scheme symbolic of the 70’s as there are a lot of browns and oranges. The brown is a connotation of masculinity. The BBC logo at the bottom of the poster is what was used in the 70’s for the BBC. This is a good marketing idea as it nostalgic for certain viewers, so it will make them want to watch it. They then had many two pages spreads in magazines which are good marketing tools as they are full of images and colours to it will interest the readers and they will then want to watch the TV show. The BBC will have payed a lot of money for these, so they must work effectively. They also got their advertisements on the front cover of a lot of magazines. This is a good way to advertise as people may not by the magazine, but they will always see the front covers and if they see the TV show that seems interesting then they will either buy the magazine or they will look up the TV show when they get home and watch it. For the second season of Life on Mars more advertisement methods where used such as T-shirts, websites, memes about Gene Hunt, books and even a calendar. These are all great uses of advertisement as they will interest those interested in the first season and who will be big fans of the show as it was a big hit with many people. The website is great as it allows people to learn more about the characters and more about the story of the TV show.

2)   Explore the link to BBC press pack and note the links and the features, relate to the target audience.
The press pack for Life on Mars has a lot of links on it. The links contains: Introduction, How the seventies were brought back to life, Cast and Creative Team, John Simm, Phillip Glenister, Liz White, Dean Andrews, Marshall Lancaster, the regulars and the guest cast, the car’s the star, do you remember 1973 and Synopses. Firstly, I’ll start with the introduction. This gives a brief introduction to what the show is about and so insight into the plot of it. This brings in an audience as they will be intrigued by what they have read about so they will go and watch the show. Next, I will talk about how the seventies were brought back to life. This section starts with them talking about how they came up with the idea for the story of the show. It also talks about how the idea slowly developed from just a cop show to what it is now. The next section is the cast and the creative team. This section is pretty self-explanatory as it just talks about the cast and who they played and who in the creative team was in charge of certain things. Each area of the press pack reveals more about the TV show. This is good because it allows the audience to be more engaged in the show and gives those who really enjoy the show more information about the show. It also attracts more viewers because they will find things that interest them in the press pack and if they haven’t watched the show then they will go and watch it.

3)   Note the links at the bottom of the page to BARB, TV licence and OFCOM. Have a quick look at these to see what information is there.
BARB is the ‘Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board’ they collect online TV viewing data. OFCOM regulate the TV, radio and video on demand sectors. The BBC own the TV licence and we get taxed throughout the year so that we don’t have and adverts for the channels. If you don’t pay your TV licence you can get a fine and possible prison sentence.

4)   Contrast this to marketing in the 1970’s.
The marketing in the 70’s was completely different to how things are advertised now.

5)   Condense David Hesmondhaighs.

He believes that know industries are starting to lose creativity and that the states are not a true representation of the creative industry. He believes that companies are starting to create the same things over and over again and are still getting lots on money without changing the formula.
