Connotation and Denotation of Kendrick Lamar and Adele

Connotation and Denotation

The denotative elements on the album cover for Adele’s 25 are that it is called Adele 25; the image is a photo of Adele’s face were she is staring boldly into the camera with wide eyes. There is a filter used on the album cover.  She is wearing makeup.  The connotative elements on the album cover for Adele’s 25 are the filter used as it could be suggesting the sadness or seriousness of the songs on the album as dark colours usually have connotations of bad things happening and negative thoughts.  The use of the colour red for 25 could be used to suggest the songs are about love as the colour red has connotations of passion, power or determination possibly to get over what has happened in Adele’s life.

The denotative elements on the poster for Kendrick Lamar are that it is called good kid in a mad city; the image is a photo of Kendrick Lamar; it has a parental advisory sticker on it; he is wearing a silver bracelet and he is looking away from the camera also the background is grey. The connotative elements of the poster are in the title it says good kid he could be talking about himself and how he was a good person growing up then followed by mad city suggesting he felt like he was brought up in the wrong city.  The parental advisory sticker suggests how some of his songs may talk about tough topics and contain bad language. The connotations with the colour grey suggest that he has no emotion now because of what he went through growing up.

The evidence to show that these two are for two different audiences are the use of the parental advisory on the Kendrick Lamar poster showing it is for older people whereas Adele can be listened to by anyone.
